What font is that? Field notes on the lettering in public life — road signs, license plates, logos, jerseys, the Constitution — and on the geometric and rounded sans serifs Vigil comes from. Every claim is sourced, and the answer is often a correction to the one everyone repeats.

  1. The airport font is Frutiger — and Heathrow ran a serifDrawn for Charles de Gaulle, released in 1976. Heathrow used a custom serif for a decade, and the testing backed it.
  2. The baseball jersey font isn’t a fontThe rulebook legislates six inches of height and nothing else. The letters are cut from cloth, not typed.
