A geometric sans serif is a typeface built from the compass and the ruler instead of the pen. Its O is close to a true circle, its strokes hold a single uniform weight, and its A comes to a point. Everything else in the category follows from those three decisions — including its famous weakness, which is that a perfect circle is a bad letter.

The four tells
You can classify a sans serif in about four seconds if you know where to look. Set the word Oahu and check these in order.
1. Draw a square around the O
A geometric O fills that square almost exactly. A grotesque O — Helvetica, Arial, Univers — is a slightly narrowed oval, taller than it is wide. A humanist O is narrower still and often visibly tilted. The circle is the single loudest signal in the category, which is why the letter O is on the cover of roughly every specimen ever printed for one of these faces.
2. Look for thick and thin
Geometric sans faces are monolinear: the vertical of the H and the curve of the O are drawn at the same weight. Most other sans serifs quietly thin their strokes where two curves join, because the eye reads an untreated joint as a dark blot. A face that refuses to do this is telling you it cares about construction more than optics.
3. Check the apex of the A
Compass-and-ruler construction gives you a triangle, so the A comes to a genuine point and the M is a pair of them. Flatten that apex and you are almost always looking at a grotesque instead.
4. Then look at the lowercase a — this one splits the category
This is the tell most guides get wrong. A single-storey a — a circle with a stem, the way a child draws it — means a strict geometric: Futura, Century Gothic, ITC Avant Garde Gothic, Poppins. A double-storey a, with the little hood over the bowl, means a humanist geometric: Avenir, Gotham, Proxima Nova, Montserrat, Figtree.
Both are geometric sans serifs. But that one letter tells you which half of the category you're in, and the two halves are good at completely different jobs.
Why the strict ones are hard to read
Reading is pattern recognition, and it runs mostly on the top half of the lowercase. The eye distinguishes letters by their differences — the way an n is not quite an h, the way a c opens where an o closes. Pure geometry works against exactly that. When every round letter is generated from the same circle, b, d, p, q, o, c and e converge on a single shape, and the reader has to slow down and disambiguate.
The 1920s originals compounded this with small x-heights. Futura's lowercase is short relative to its capitals, which looks elegant in a headline and turns a paragraph into grey soup. Set a page in Futura at 16 pixels and you will feel it in your neck.
None of which makes them bad typefaces. It makes them display typefaces that were marketed as text typefaces, which is a different problem.
How the second generation fixed it
Adrian Frutiger's Avenir, in 1988, is the hinge. He kept the geometric skeleton and then broke the rules where reading demanded it: the O isn't quite a circle, the strokes thin slightly at the joints, the x-height goes up, and the lowercase a gets its second storey back. He described it as a geometric sans drawn by a human hand.
Nearly everything since has followed that compromise and pushed the x-height further for screens. That's the lineage running through Gotham, Proxima Nova, Circular, Figtree and their many relatives — geometric enough to feel constructed and modern, humanist enough to survive a thousand-word article.
The ones worth knowing
The originals
- Futura — Paul Renner, 1927. The category's definition and still its best display face. Went to the Moon on the Apollo 11 plaque. Small x-height; use it big.
- Erbar — Jakob Erbar, 1926. Beat Futura to the idea by a year and lost the century to it.
- Kabel — Rudolf Koch, 1927. The strangest of the three, with a tilted e and an oddly high waist. Worth using precisely because it's odd.
- ITC Avant Garde Gothic — Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase, 1970. Geometry pushed to display extremes, with a famous set of overlapping ligatures. Almost impossible to set well and unmistakable when you do.
- Century Gothic — Monotype, 1991. The one already installed on your machine. Enormously wide, which costs you line length.
The workhorses
- Avenir — Adrian Frutiger, 1988. The humanist geometric that made the rest possible.
- Gotham — Tobias Frere-Jones, 2000. Drawn from New York architectural lettering rather than Bauhaus theory, which is why it reads as American rather than German.
- Proxima Nova — Mark Simonson, 2005. Geometric proportions with grotesque details; for a decade it was the default voice of the web.
- Circular — Laurenz Brunner, 2013. The one every startup rebranded into, and still very good.
The free ones
All of these are open-licensed and free for commercial use, which matters more than it should — a typeface you cannot afford to renew is a typeface you will have to redesign around later.
- Poppins — Indian Type Foundry, 2014. Strict geometric, monolinear, single-storey a. Excellent for headlines, tiring for paragraphs.
- Montserrat — Julieta Ulanovsky, 2011. Drawn from painted signage in a Buenos Aires neighbourhood, which gives it a warmth the Bauhaus faces don't have.
- Jost* — a Futura-inspired open-source revival, and the closest you'll legally get to Futura for nothing.
- League Spartan — another Futura-lineage face, heavier and better suited to display.
- Josefin Sans — unmistakably 1920s, with a very small x-height. A display face; treat it as one.
- Figtree — Erik Kennedy. A humanist geometric with a large x-height, built for interfaces. Vigil is derived from it.
- Outfit — clean, contemporary, geometric, and unusually consistent across its weights.
Which one to pick
- For a headline or a logo, take a strict geometric. Futura, Poppins, Josefin Sans, Jost. The uniformity that hurts reading is exactly what makes a wordmark look inevitable.
- For body copy, take a humanist geometric with a large x-height. Avenir, Proxima Nova, Figtree, Vigil. You want the constructed feel without the reading tax.
- For an interface, prioritise x-height and a distinguishable 1/l/I over purity of geometry. Test at 13 and 14 pixels, not at 48.
- For signage, go wider and heavier than feels right on screen, and check the counters — the enclosed spaces in a, e and o are the first thing to fill in at distance or in the rain.
Where Vigil sits
Vigil is a humanist geometric in the Avenir lineage: circular bones, large x-height, double-storey a, built to be set at sixteen pixels. Its one departure from the category is that it treats corner softness as a variable rather than a constant — rounded most at the exposed terminals where a stroke ends in open space, less at the structural joints, and not at all on the punctuation. The effect is that it reads as a clean geometric sans in a paragraph and only looks visibly rounded when you set it large. The reasoning is here.
It is not the best geometric sans on this page. Futura is a better display face and Avenir is a better book face. It is a good one that costs nothing and always will, which for a lot of projects is the specification that actually matters.
