"VHS font" is three questions wearing one coat. The VHS logo is set in Lee, a 1970s typeface by Leo Weisz. The blocky on-screen text from a VCR was never a typeface at all — it was a bitmap baked into a chip. And the VHS look people actually want is mostly not typography.
Sort out which one you mean and the answer becomes easy. Fail to, and you end up with crisp retro lettering that stubbornly refuses to look like a tape.
The logo: Lee, by Leo Weisz, 1976
The VHS wordmark — the tall, tightly packed capitals with those distinctive flat-sided curves — was produced in 1976 for the Victor HR-3300, the first VCR to use the format. It is set in Lee, a typeface drawn by Leo Weisz for Visual Graphics Corporation.
Lee is a very 1970s object: dense, geometric, slightly claustrophobic, built for photo-lettering rather than metal. The same face was used for the Charlie's Angels title sequence the same year. Weisz, by the accounts of people who track this, lived past a hundred and kept working.
One typeface, one year, two artefacts that now function as shorthand for the entire decade. 1976 was a good year for Leo Weisz.
Lee also explains why the logo is so hard to reproduce by setting it. Photo-lettering faces of that era were drawn to be manipulated — stretched, tightened, overlapped on the film — and the VHS wordmark takes full advantage, with the three letters packed far closer than any default spacing would allow. Type it out in Lee and you get something recognisably related and visibly not the logo.
This is the only part of the question with a clean typographic answer, and it is the part almost nobody is asking about.
The on-screen text: a chip, not a font
What people usually mean by "the VHS font" is the chunky white lettering a VCR painted over the picture. PLAY. REC. STOP. 12:00.
That was never type in any sense a foundry would recognise. It came from the machine's on-screen display circuit, which held a font ROM — a small read-only memory storing each character as a grid of dots. The circuit decoded a position, pulled the matching bit pattern, and painted it into the video signal during the blanking interval between scan lines.
So the letters were not drawn by a type designer and licensed. They were drawn by an engineer, on graph paper, to fit a dot matrix and a memory budget. Different manufacturers shipped different character sets. Different models from the same manufacturer often did too.
Why it looks like that
Every feature of that lettering is a consequence of the job, in the same way that licence plate letters were shaped by a stamping die.
- Coarse and blocky because a character was a handful of dots across. There was no resolution for a curve, so curves became staircases.
- Monospaced because a character generator addresses a fixed grid. Proportional spacing needs arithmetic the chip was not going to do.
- Heavy strokes because thin ones vanish on an interlaced display, where alternate scan lines refresh on alternate fields and a one-pixel horizontal flickers.
- Outlined or drop-shadowed because the text sits on top of arbitrary video. White on white is unreadable, so the characters carry their own contrast with them.
- Widely spaced because analogue bandwidth smears horizontal detail, and letters set tight would bleed into each other.
Not one of those is a style decision. The aesthetic that now signals nostalgia was a set of grudging compromises with a cheap chip and a noisy signal.
The font everyone actually downloads
If you want that look as type, the answer in practice is VCR OSD Mono, released in 2014 by Riciery Santos Leal. It is a monospaced bitmap-style font emulating vintage VCR on-screen display text, free for personal and commercial use, and it has been downloaded several million times.
It is worth being precise about what it is. VCR OSD Mono is a homage, not a digitisation — it was drawn to evoke the category, not traced from one manufacturer's character ROM. That is not a criticism. There is no canonical original to be faithful to, because every machine had its own.
The part the font will not fix
Here is where most VHS-styled work goes wrong. Set VCR OSD Mono cleanly, in white, on a flat background, and it does not read as VHS. It reads as a pixel font.
The VHS signature is not in the letterforms. It is in the degradation:
- Chroma bleed — colour carried at far lower bandwidth than brightness, so saturated edges smear sideways, especially reds and magentas.
- Scan lines and interlacing, with the comb artefacts that appear on anything moving.
- Tracking error — the torn horizontal band that shudders up the frame.
- Generation loss, the softness and noise of a copy of a copy.
Those are signal properties, not typographic ones. A designer chasing the VHS look with font choice alone is solving maybe a fifth of the problem. The other four fifths are a chroma-offset filter and a willingness to make things look broken.
Building the look, in the right order
If the goal is a convincing tape, the typography is the last step rather than the first. A workable order:
- Start at 4:3. Nothing reads as VHS in a widescreen frame. The aspect ratio does more work than any filter.
- Set the text in a monospaced bitmap face, in white, with a hard black outline or shadow. Keep it in the corners — top left for the mode, bottom for the counter — because that is where a real machine put it, and placement is a stronger cue than letterform.
- Only then degrade. Chroma offset first, pushing red and blue apart horizontally by a pixel or two. Then scan lines. Then a little noise and softness.
- Break something. One tracking band, one dropout, one moment of instability. Perfect degradation is a contradiction, and evenly-applied grain reads as a filter rather than as damage.
- Resist the urge to be legible. The reference depends on the picture being slightly worse than you are comfortable shipping.
The common failure is applying a heavy filter to everything uniformly, including the overlay text. On a real machine the character generator painted after the tape was read, so the on-screen text was noticeably cleaner than the footage under it. Degrading them equally is the tell that something was made in software.
What a type designer takes from this
Two things, and the first is now a running theme on this site.
Constraints become styles once the constraints are gone. Nobody in 1985 thought the VCR character generator was attractive. It was what fit in the chip. Forty years later, the marks left by that limitation are the entire point — exactly as happened with embossed plate lettering, which is now reproduced by flat printers that never met a die. A constraint that leaves a visible fingerprint will eventually be imitated by people who have no idea what caused it.
The second is about where meaning lives. If the feeling you want comes from degradation, no typeface will deliver it, because typefaces are drawn clean. This is a genuinely useful diagnostic: when a reference will not come together, ask whether the thing you are copying is the shape or the damage. Half the time it is the damage, and then you need a filter, not a font.
Vigil is the wrong tool here, obviously
No hedging required. Vigil is a clean geometric sans with smooth curves and open counters, drawn for screens that render accurately. It has nothing to offer a project that wants to look like a worn tape, and dressing it up with a glitch filter would be a costume rather than a reference.
Use VCR OSD Mono for the on-screen text. Track down Lee if you need the logo, and expect to draw the wordmark rather than set it. Then spend your effort on the signal, because that is where the effect actually lives.
Vigil is for the other part — the legible geometric sans that carries the words around the reference. It is free under the SIL Open Font License, and it is honest about not being a time machine.
