FONTLOG for Vigil Serif
-------------------------------------------------------------------
This file provides detailed information on the Vigil Serif font software and
should be distributed along with the Vigil Serif fonts and any derivative works.

Vigil Serif is a derivative of Vollkorn by Friedrich Althausen, reproportioned
to pair with Vigil, a softened geometric grotesk, so that the two share a cap
height, an x-height and a line box. Vollkorn's own information and its changelog
from 2005 onward follow this section unchanged, as the SIL Open Font License FAQ
asks of a derivative.

Vollkorn declares no Reserved Font Name, so the rename is permitted outright.
The licence requires only that Vollkorn's copyright notice and the licence
travel with every copy, which they do: in OFL.txt, in the copyright field of
every font file, and on the specimen page.

Vigil Serif ChangeLog
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(Most recent first. Vollkorn's own entries continue below this section.)

18 September 2026 (Joaquin Keno Vigil) Vigil Serif Version 1.100
- Added an ExtraLight at 200, roman and italic, so the axis runs 200 to 900 and
the serif reaches the light end the sans already had. Sixteen static instances.
It is built the way the Light was and from the same two drawn masters, at twice
the step: Regular + 0.4 * (Regular - Black), which lands on design 64. Measured
on the build, the stem comes out at 55 against the Regular's 98 and the Light's
76, and the contrast (the stem over the o's thinnest) eases from 1.95 at Regular
through 1.69 at Light to 1.39, which is the direction a lighter cut wants: its
thins proportionally thicker, or they disappear.
- Rejoined the junctions the second extrapolation pulled apart. Vollkorn draws
many letters as overlapping pieces rather than one merged outline, and every
step lighter spends some of the overlap; at 200 thirty of them had gone
negative and 113 encoded glyphs rendered in two halves. E and every accented
form that composites from it, Y and the yen, F and the franc, f, long s, x,
chi, kappa, the ampersand, the section sign, all four rays of the currency
sign, the ff fk and long-s-k ligatures, the small-cap f, and in the italic
H K AE and their Cyrillic cousins. tools/repair_extralight_junctions.py moves
89 points across 45 junctions; every edge it moves is inside the piece that
laps over it, so no letter changed shape, only the depth of an overlap nobody
can see. The Y needed more than that: its fork's flat bottom had risen to
within half a unit of the notch between the arms, so the arms met along a
hairline. Both bottom corners now run on down their own edges into the stem.
- Repaired sixteen junctions in the Light masters at the same time. Measuring
every pair of contours in every glyph in order to size the 200's repairs found
nine that were already severed at 300 in 1.000 -- the roman E and reversed E,
both chis, the ff ligature's second f, the fk and long-s-k ligatures, the
small-cap f -- and six more holding by less than a unit. They rendered joined
only because the rasteriser filled the last fraction, which is luck, not
drawing. Same kind of edit, same invisibility: no Light outline moved.
- Known at 200 and left alone on purpose: the italic ordfeminine, whose shoulder
notch the extrapolation deepens (a redraw, not an edge to hide); the italic
tcaron, whose caron sits clear of the t as it already did at 300; H with breve
  below, whose mark stops touching the H, which is the more correct placement;
and three bracket-layer glyphs that are only ever substituted above 700.

18 September 2026 (Joaquin Keno Vigil) Vigil Serif Version 1.000
- First release, as Vigil Serif: the name is final. Variable roman and italic
on one weight axis from 300 to 900, and fourteen static instances.
- The statics are hinted with ttfautohint and carry the hinted flag; the
variable fonts carry a gasp table and a smart-dropout prep program. Every
font has a STAT table with the seven named weights and an ital axis linking
roman to italic, so the family enumerates as one on Windows and macOS.
Every instance names its PostScript font; usWinAscent/Descent are the
  family's real bounds.
- The Light, extrapolated from the Regular-Black axis, was measured stroke by
stroke against the Regular along the normals of the union outline: nothing
thins beyond proportion, so it ships as drawn. Small caps keep Vollkorn's
  ratio to the cap height.

18 September 2026 (Joaquin Keno Vigil) — pre-release work, version 0.001
- Reconnected the figure features to the figures that are actually encoded.
Making lining figures the default moved the codepoints, which silently killed
sups, subs, numr, dnom and ordn, and half of frac, because all of them were
written against the bare digit names. 504 rules added across the six feature
files; no outline moved and no glyph was renamed.
- Rejoined the junctions the Light extrapolation pulled apart. Vollkorn draws
several letters as overlapping pieces, and extrapolating below Regular shrank
the overlap until it went negative, so nineteen glyphs rendered in two halves
at weight 300: f and longs, Y and the fifteen that composite from it, F and
franc. Four hidden edges moved back inside the pieces that lap over them, so
no visible outline changed and Regular came out byte-identical.
- Cleared the stale upstream files that still described Vollkorn rather than
this font, and renamed the designspace source and instance labels. The
copyright notice, this FONTLOG and the attribution on the specimen page are
  kept deliberately.

16 September 2026 (Joaquin Keno Vigil)
- Repaired the case map. The reproportioning scripts chose a glyph's scale from
the Unicode category of its codepoint and fell back to the cap factor for
anything unencoded, so every unencoded lowercase glyph grew about 5% too
little: the italic bowls and shoulders, every drawn ligature, and the
  stylistic and locl alternates.

15 September 2026 (Joaquin Keno Vigil)
- Reproportioned to Vigil's metrics: cap and x-height raised, the lowercase
condensed at constant stem weight, descenders shortened, ascenders flattened
  to cap height.
- Lining figures made the default, old-style moved to onum.
- A Light master added at 300 by extending the Regular to Black axis, so the
serif can be set beside the sans stem for stem. Still extrapolated rather
than drawn, which is the open question on this family.
- Renamed from Vollkorn to Vigil Serif; Vollkorn's copyright and the OFL kept.

This file provides detailed information on the Vollkorn Font Software.
This information should be distributed along with the Vollkorn fonts and any derivative works.

Basic Font Information
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Vollkorn is a quiet, modest and well working body copy typeface for bread and butter use. It has dark and meaty serifs and a bouncing and healthy look and might be used as body type as well as for headlines or titles. More than 2000 glyphs per font support a wide range of languages in Latin, Cyrillic and Greek scripts.
»Vollkorn« [pronounce ‘follkorn’] is German for “wholemeal”. It refers to the old term “Brotschrift” [literally ‘bread type’] which described the small fonts for every day use in the days of hand-compositing.
Vollkorn came into being as Friedrich Althausen’s first type designing attempt while his studies at Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany. The Regular style was initially published in 2005 under a Creative-Commons-License. When GoogleFonts launched in 2010 Vollkorn was one the first twenty featured fonts.
Since 19 May 2010 Vollkorn is published under the OFL.
